Specific Genre Conventions

Best Features
- The credits were far too long.
- The title was made so that the colour wasn't camouflaged into the background, that way it is visible to the audience.
- Character introductions, although it wasn't made obvious which character was which and so this could be confusing for the audience.
Specific Genre Conventions
- It is set in a forest so it could be classed as a far away place, just like adventure genre films.
- It has different non-human characters just like a fantasy film.
- The music fits the genre of a fantasy film because it is up-beat and magical.
Camera Work
- We used lots of different camera angles, this made it look more professional.
- Examples of these camera angles are; Handheld - which gave a good atmosphere.
Special Effects
- The lighting in the flash back, which made the scene more obvious that t was a flashback and not set in the same time as the rest of the film.
- The earthquake effect during the flashback also differentiated reality from the flashback.
Sound
- The music gave the film the correct atmosphere I.e. if the film was happy then the music was happy and if the film was mysterious then the music was mysterious.
- Chase scene music made it an enjoyable for children because it was fun and upbeat.
Mise-en-scene
- Props, cardboard box for Glenda's head and plastic bag. Could of used more different props.
- Scenery; set in forest to show the adventure genre.
Editing
- The flashback scene, the lighting showed that it was a flashback rather than at the present time.
- Could of used wider variety.
Best Features
- Use of the flashback.
- The soundtrack which sets the scene.

Monsters Inc - Kieran
Monsters Inc.
The film starts with a shot of a young child’s bedroom, and then the mother says “Goodnight” with a reply of a boy. The camera then lowers to show a boy sleeping. Everything seems quite, then there is a lot of close up shots of his toys. The door then squeaks open, awaking the boy to realise it was only his jumper. It goes to a wide shot of the boys bed where a mysterious shadowed figure walks across, then panning down under the bed to see two spooky eyes in the darkness. The monster then stands up behind the boy, awakening him and causing him to scream, but then the monster screams back and starts to fall over all the boys’ belongings, when we find out that it was actually a simulation of a monster pretending to scare a boy with other monsters watching. We then realise that the film is actually about monsters life not about a child’s life, and how they collect children’s screams to power their cities.
The main characters are then introduced by the boss of the company collecting screams describing his best qualities of an employee ‘Sully’, then changing shot to a blue monster snoring. We are then introduced to the second main character ‘Mikey’ who is training Sully to scare children in different ways.
The film is a fantasy adventure film, because it involves monsters which could seem mythical. Also it is a new adventure for the monsters, getting involved which a child and emotionally attached, then having to fight off bad guys to save the little girl and return her to her home safe. This fits with the opening sequence because it is a new experience for a monster joining the scaring business.

Evidence of Planning - The Tigger Movie - Jordan
The film opens to an establishing shot of a view of the young boy, Christopher Robin's bedroom, within the scene a narrator introduces the character and the story as a whole. As the story is about a child's imaginary friends in the form of his toy animals. The narrator mentions they have many adventures in an enchanted place (hundred acre wood) which instantly gives off the feeling that it's a fantasy/adventure genre film. The narrator explains about all of Christopher's friends including his best friend, Whinnie the Pooh. As soon as Pooh bear is mentioned Tigger (In cartoon form) jumps out onto the screen and starts complaining to the narrator saying that the stories should be more about him rather than Pooh bear. The narrator in response says, "but the title is already Whinnie the Pooh" showing a book with Whinnie the Pooh as the title, which normally sets Pooh bear as the main character, however Tigger takes the title and changes it around to say "The Tigger Movie" and then jumps into the book which shows Tigger to be the main character and not Pooh bear. The camera then moves into the book, starting the enchanting adventure in Hundred acre wood.
The film is an animated adventure/fantasy about a child's stuffed animals which connects to practically every child because every child has at least one stuffed animal and many children do fantasize about their toys coming to life which is exactly what this film is about. A boy's creativity playing with his alive toys in an enchanted place.
The atmosphere of the opening sequence is relaxed as it is set out as the narrator telling a story, it really gives off the feeling that your going to hear a good tale and Tigger's interruption makes the story telling vibe a lot more exciting.
Thank you for reading xx

Evidence of Planning - Up - Sam
The information relayed in the opening scene shows the life of the old man. This sets up the back story for that character making the rest of the film better for the consumer knowing that information. The different characters in the film are slightly stereotyped. For example the old man is cranky and has a walking stick. The young boy is full of energy and talks a lot.
The film establishes the location during the opening scene, this shows the man and his wife building there home and sets the scene for the film.
The genre is a family adventure film. This is shown because it is animated which is more typical for a family film. The film also has more family oriented characters such as a talking dog a young boy and an old man. The film is also set in distant lands away from the main characters homes which shows that it is an adventure film.
The film has a song that is played throughout the film and changed in tone depending on the situation. e.g. if it is a sad scene then the song is played slowly and if it is happy then it is played in a more upbeat fashion.

Evidence of planning - The Polar Express - Lynsey
This opening sequence involves an introduction to the main character, a little boy. There is a narration by a man before you see the boy, and he talks about himself as in the boy is him, and he is speaking about that night. You first see him in his bed on christmas eve, until he opens his eyes to the sound of bells and sneaks downstairs to see whether santa has come. He becomes excited when he sees a shadow in the shape of santa claus, but his disappointment is obvious when he realises its his family making the noise, and hides in his room listening to their conversation about how he doesn't really believe in santa. He proceeds to look at lots of different sources which prove that anyone can dress as in a red suit, many dress as santa and pretend to be him, and that the north pole is 'devoid of life.' His parents kiss him goodnight and he is then woken up by the train at exactly 5 to midnight.
the narration gives the instant realisation that the young boy is the main character.
This film is an animated adventure, containing fantasy and set at christmas time. the opening sequence sticks to the conventions of a childrens film, it is something any child who celebrates christmas would experience, staying up late at night hoping to see santa. The main character is a very ordinary looking young boy, with ordinary pyjamas, and looks rather boring. The establishing shot of this film comes down from the sky, it is snowing, which makes the perfect christmas eve's night to wake up to fresh snow on christmas day. It is all supposed to be perfect except the little boy's disbelief. the overall atmosphere is tense but exciting, its building up to something exciting occuring.

It is PG because there is no discrimination, no drugs, no horror, no imitable behavior, no bad language, no sex/nudity, our theme will not condone any sorts of violence to fit in the PG guidelines, it has moderate violence and this will push the rating up to PG instead of U.

Universal Classification -
Any persons of any age can observe, purchase and/or rent a film which is classified as Universal!!!
DISCRIMINATION - This would not be in a universal film because it would be unsuitable for them to have their little innocent minds corrupted by the evil that is the unsuitableness of discrimination.
Drugs - These would not be in a Universal film because they would not be suitable for every audience to view therefore they would not be in a U film.
Horror - There would be no horror in a U classified film. this is because it would not be suitable for every audience and so a film with horror in it would be rated a higher classification.
Imitable Behavior - This would not be in a universally classified film because children can watch it and so they could imitate the behavior as they are more susceptible to imitable behavior.
Language - There would not be any bad language in a universal film because it could be seen by a child who could then imitate the language.

Theme - A universally classified film would not have a scary/horrifical or sexual theme. Themes that are acceptable in a universally classified film are: fantasy, adventure, action, sci-fi.
Violence - A universally classified film would not have violence because it would unsuitable for children to view as they could imitate it or it could be mentally disturbing.

RUGRATS THE MOOVIE
This film fits the conventions of an adventure genre film by consisting of various adventurous genre conventions that we will now explain in great detail. One adventurous genre convention that this film contains is the music which is very fast paced and upbeat which helps show the genre of the film. More adventurous conventions within this particular film include; Rescues, stunts, car chases, animation, escapism and a new experience for the characters i.e the babies.
These are the adventurous conventions displayed within the adventurous film that is The Rugrats Movie.
The LORD OF THE RINGS - THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
This film is a fantasy/action, it contains many, if not all of the conventions of fantasy and action films. It is a fantasy as it contains mythical creatures, which do not exist in real life. It starts off realistically in the sense that the beginning doesnt contain a lot of magic objects and mythical creatures, just some hobbits, but it soon becomes more of a fantasy film with the introduction of Gandalf, the grey wizard. It is a historical fantasy as the films are set as a story, talking about the history of middle earth. It's an action film because it contains lots of rescues, battles, fights, escapes, destruction, big budget physical stunts and fast paced music.

Glenda evaluation
our production of "Glenda" has taught us to use finalcut pro in detail, and we have also learnt how to mix audio with visual, along with a lot of other things in this programme. This practice has helped to prepare us for a real production because now we know the basics of how to use the programme to produce a video, aswell as how imporant various things are in the production of this format of media. things such as continuity, getting sound accurate to the timing of the visual clips - things like that.
