Monsters Inc.
The film starts with a shot of a young child’s bedroom, and then the mother says “Goodnight” with a reply of a boy. The camera then lowers to show a boy sleeping. Everything seems quite, then there is a lot of close up shots of his toys. The door then squeaks open, awaking the boy to realise it was only his jumper. It goes to a wide shot of the boys bed where a mysterious shadowed figure walks across, then panning down under the bed to see two spooky eyes in the darkness. The monster then stands up behind the boy, awakening him and causing him to scream, but then the monster screams back and starts to fall over all the boys’ belongings, when we find out that it was actually a simulation of a monster pretending to scare a boy with other monsters watching. We then realise that the film is actually about monsters life not about a child’s life, and how they collect children’s screams to power their cities.
The main characters are then introduced by the boss of the company collecting screams describing his best qualities of an employee ‘Sully’, then changing shot to a blue monster snoring. We are then introduced to the second main character ‘Mikey’ who is training Sully to scare children in different ways.
The film is a fantasy adventure film, because it involves monsters which could seem mythical. Also it is a new adventure for the monsters, getting involved which a child and emotionally attached, then having to fight off bad guys to save the little girl and return her to her home safe. This fits with the opening sequence because it is a new experience for a monster joining the scaring business.
